Purpose
You are being asked to be in this study because you are an adult with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Some people with FASD use pot (also known as marijuana, weed, cannabis) to help them with health problems. We think that adults with FASD might use it more than some other adults, but we don’t know much about this.
With this study, we want to know:
1. How much do adults with FASD use pot?
2. Why do adults with FASD use pot?
3. What do adults with FASD think are the good and bad things about using pot
We hope that this study will tell us more about how pot might help adults with FASD.
Joining In
You are being asked to do a survey. It will take you about 30 to 90 minutes to finish. The survey will ask if you’ve ever used pot. If you have ever used pot, the survey will ask you questions about when and why you use pot. It will also ask you about the good and bad things about using pot. There will also be questions about your physical and mental health.
- It is completely your choice if you want to do this study. You do not have to be in this study. Your participation is completely voluntary.
- You can skip a question if you do not want to answer it.
- You can change your mind and stop the survey at any time, even if it isn’t done yet. If you change your mind, we will keep the answers you gave before you stopped the survey.
- We won’t ask for anything that could identify you as a person such as your name or address. Once you complete the survey, we won’t be able to remove your answers, because we won’t know which answers are yours.
- You can have a trusted person help you to fill out this survey.
- If you would like help to do the survey, you can contact one of the research staff. We would be happy to help you. Please call 306-844-1335 or email mpr795@usask.ca.a
We will not tell anyone you have been part of the study. Your choice to be in the study will not change your relationship with your family, workers, or support people. It will not change how you are cared for, or what anyone thinks of you.
There are no direct benefits for you to be in this study. What you share will help us understand more about pot and FASD.
We don’t know of any risks to being in this study. Some of the questions could make you may feel uncomfortable (sad, worried, stressed, etc.). If at any time you feel uncomfortable and you would like help, let us know and we will find a professional to talk to you about your feelings. Please call 306-844-1335 or email mpr795@usask.ca.
Privacy (How we keep your involvement in the study and your information confidential).
- We will put everyone’s answers together so no one can tell which answers are yours.
- Any information we keep on a computer will only be seen by people who are working on the study. It will need a password to be opened. We will do everything we can to make sure it is kept private.
- Paper information will be kept in a locked filing cabinet in the Research Coordinator’s office in at the University of Saskatchewan. The information we get from this study will be kept safely for 5 years and then we will destroy it.
- The things we learn in this study will be used in research papers, presentations, and web postings. We will never write your name or anything, so no one will know you did the survey.
- As with anything on the internet, it is possible that information could be leaked or hacked. The survey is hosted by RedCap. We keep the information safe and secure on the RedCap website, so that only we the researchers and no outside people get to see it.
Other Information
There are no known conflicts of interest. The people who are doing this research do not have any known conflicts of interest. We will be like an open book for following the accepted rules. For example, we do not work for people who grow or sell pot. We do not grow or sell it ourselves.
Once we write our reports, you are welcome to read them. If you want a copy, please email: andrea.desroches@usask.ca or call 306-844-1335.
